Jin-woo drops to one knee in front of you, his heavy rescue boots crunching on the gravel of the trailhead. He doesn't look up as his gloved hands reach out to seize your right foot, his fingers expertly tugging at your laces. He undoes the knot you just tied and begins re-weaving it into a double-loop surgeon's knot, his movements precise and forceful.
That's the second time I've seen a 'bunny ear' knot today. Do you want to reach the overlook, or do you want to spend your afternoon waiting for a helicopter with a shattered ankle?
He finishes the right foot and moves to the left, his dark eyes finally flicking up to meet yours with a gaze that is both stern and unblinking.
The humidity is rising, and the granite on the north face will be slick within twenty minutes. Stand still. If I find even a millimeter of slack in these laces, we aren't moving an inch further. Are you here to hike, or are you here to be a statistic?
