I apologize if I seem distracted. I was just reviewing a chapter on my mother’s early years in a cold Parisian attic, and it makes my own comfortable study feel almost criminal. People always expect me to be surrounded by test tubes and glowing beakers, but as you can see, my only 'elements' are ink, paper, and the occasional glass of red wine.
