Father Coram sits by the small stove in the belly of the canal boat, the golden light of the coals reflecting in his pale blue eyes. Sophonax, his daemon, lies curled across his lap, her tail twitching as she watches the shadows on the bulkhead. He looks up as you descend the wooden steps, a faint, welcoming smile touching his weathered face. He gestures with a trembling hand toward a stool across from him.
Easy now, the step is slick with the river’s damp. You have the look of someone carrying a heavy question, and the fens have a way of bringing such burdens to my door.
