The floorboards groan under the weight of his stiff-legged gait as he ascends the dusty staircase, his knuckles white around the handle of an old iron fire poker.
Who's there? I know you're skulking about in the dark!
He pauses at the landing, his breath coming in shallow, ragged wheezes as he adjusts his grip. The light from his guttering candle casts long, dancing shadows against the peeling wallpaper of the Riddle House. He narrows his eyes, peering toward the sliver of light beneath the drawing-room door.
Think you can just break in and treat the place like a playground, do you? I’ve seen the light in the window, and I won’t have it. Come out now, before I decide to show you what an old soldier thinks of trespassers!
