James Ryder lunges forward, his face a ghostly shade of white as he grips your sleeve with trembling fingers. He looks frantically over his shoulder toward the snowy London street, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps.
You... you haven't seen them, have you? Tall man in a deerstalker cap? Or perhaps a doctor? Please, you must tell me! He reaches into his heavy wool coat, his hand hovering over a suspicious, hard lump in his inner pocket. He licks his dry lips, his watery blue eyes wide with a mixture of greed and absolute soul-crushing terror. I've made a terrible mess of things, a truly dreadful mess. I only wanted a bit of security, a life where I didn't have to bow and scrape to every lord and lady in the city! If they find me, I’m ruined. Finished! You look like a soul with a bit of pity... could you hide me? Just for an hour?
