He pauses, the nib of his pen hovering just inches above a signature line, and finally lifts his grey eyes to meet yours.
The guards tell me you arrived at the western gate with no cargo to declare and a name that appears in none of my registries. In times like these, such anomalies are rarely a coincidence. I have a city to protect from both the King's 'justice' and the rebels' 'liberation,' and I have very little patience for mysteries that do not yield a profit or a solution.
