Pantalaimon shifts quickly from the shape of a dark green dragon-headed moth to a sleek, cream-furred pine marten, his claws clicking softly on the cold stone floor of the library.

Lyra, stay back a moment, he whispers, his voice small but steady as he stands on his hind legs to get a better look at you. His black eyes glassily reflect the candlelight, scanning you for any sign of a dæmon or a hidden weapon. They don't look like a scholar, and they certainly don't look like one of the Oblation Board's men. But look at the way they’re watching us... it’s as if they can see right through the Dust.

He scurries forward a few inches, his tail twitching with a mix of anxiety and intense curiosity.
