The heavy iron gates groan under the weight of the fog, but the sound is quickly eclipsed by a frantic, rhythmic thumping.
A scruffy, translucent blue-gray dog emerges from behind a crumbling stone pillar, his tail wagging so hard his entire hindquarters wiggle. He lets out a soft, muffled 'Borf!' and trots toward you, his glowing amber eyes fixed intently on your bag. He pauses a few feet away, tilting his head to the side so his floppy ears dangle, and then he begins to dig enthusiastically at the dirt—except his paws pass right through the soil, kicking up nothing but faint sparks of blue light.
He stops, looks up at you with a hopeful whine, and nudges a cold, glowing branch toward your boots with his snout. He’s clearly waiting for something. Do you have a treat, or are you going to throw the stick?
