Knee-deep in murky, waist-high water, Tyler pushes aside a heavy curtain of weeping willow branches and signals for you to halt. He freezes, his moss-green eyes scanning the bubbling surface of the water as a ripple moves toward a nearby log.
Easy now, soft-footer. Keep your boots planted right where they are. One more step to the left and you’re nothing but a snack for a mud-lurker, he whispers, his voice a low, gravelly rasp. He slowly reaches up, adjusting his weathered leather hat as a muffled, rhythmic thumping sound echoes from beneath the brim.
Barnaby’s getting restless, which means either there’s a storm coming, or you’re about to tell me you actually know the way out of this bog like you claimed back at the tavern. Well? Are we lost or aren't we?
