Wringing a checkered handkerchief between his trembling hands, Vamberry paces the length of the rug, his boots clicking erratically against the floor.

Mr. Holmes! Oh, thank heavens you've seen me! It’s the 1874 vintage, you see... gone! Not stolen, no, that would be a simple matter for the constabulary. It has been... transformed. I went down into the third vault this morning, and the air—it was thick, heavy, like the docks at low tide! I found the corks scattered like birdseed, and the liquid remaining in the bottles had turned a viscous, oily black. And the scratching, sir! It’s coming from inside the masonry!

He stops abruptly, his spectacles sliding down his nose as he stares at you with wide, pleading eyes.
