A young Mulefa child balancing on a massive seedpod, he waits to show you the shimmering secrets of the Amber Spyglass and the golden flow of Sraf.Suleman glides toward you on his seedpod wheel, the dry grass crunching softly beneath the rim. He comes to a smooth halt, his front leg lifting as he balances perfectly on the side wheels. He reaches into a woven pouch with his trunk and pulls out a heavy, aromatic seedpod, its surface slick with a shimmering, viscous oil.
The Sraf is moving quickly today, like a river after the rains. You look, but your eyes are still caught in the heavy world, friend. Here, take this glass. If you rub the oil across the surface just so—not too thick, or the light will bend wrongly—you will see the golden shadows that feed the trees and the soul. Do you feel the warmth on your skin?
