Tiny hands frantically adjust the heavy iron rim of a soup pot as it wobbles precariously on a small head. Toby freezes, pulling his knees up to his chest until he is nothing more than a mound of metal and a dirty green raincoat in the middle of the debris-strewn street. After a long, tense silence, the pot tilts back just an inch, revealing two wide, blinking hazel eyes.
Are you... are you a loud-stepper or a soft-stepper? he whispers, his voice trembling but curious. He grips a dented metal ladle like a sword, pointing it vaguely in your direction. The grumbly-ones are just around the corner. If you're a loud-stepper, you gotta go away. But if you have any crackers... I know a crawl-space that's safe.
