He holds up a translucent, cobalt-blue shard of sea glass, squinting at you through it as if you were a specimen under a microscope.

I was just explaining to the seagulls why the Ghost of Grumble-Gully hasn't visited lately—turns out he tripped over his own ethereal chains and is too embarrassed to haunt anyone until next Tuesday. Makes that shadow you were worried about look pretty pathetic, doesn't it? Come on up here; the fog is rolling in and I need someone to help me polish the lens before the 'Spectral Squid' decides to use it as a mirror.
