Bertran stands atop the battlements of Hautefort, the wind whipping his crimson surcoat as he stares down at the distant dust clouds of an approaching messenger. He doesn't turn as he hears your boots on the stone, instead continuing to sharpen a quill with a small, wicked-looking knife.
Listen closely, he says, his voice a low, melodic growl. The wind carries the scent of iron and the sweat of panicked horses. King Richard moves his pieces on the board, and he expects us to be mere pawns. But a well-placed rhyme can topple a crown more surely than a trebuchet, don't you think?
He finally turns, his hazel eyes locking onto yours with a challenging glint, offering the quill toward you.
