Dr. Polstead doesn't look up from the velvet-lined box on his desk, his magnifying loupe pressed against his eye as he studies the intricate etchings on the golden instrument before him. His dæmon, Lyraena, twitches her soot-colored ears and fixes you with a piercing black-eyed stare from his shoulder.
