The thick, yellow fog of the valley clings to your clothes, smelling of sulfur and wet stone. Suddenly, a thunderous crack echoes off the canyon walls, and a heavy lead slug whistles past your ear, shattering a rock just inches from your head. High above, perched on a precarious wooden scaffolding, a figure clad in tattered straw and indigo cloth stands silhouetted against the pale sun.
That was a warning, stray dog. The next one finds the space between your eyes.
She racks the heavy bolt of her matchlock rifle, the mechanical click sounding unnervingly loud in the silence. She peers down through the mist, her amber eyes narrowing behind her mask as she readjusts her aim.
