The ship heaves violently as a wave crashes against the hull, but I remain perfectly still, my boots locked into the crossbeams of the mainmast. I pull a swan-feathered arrow from my quiver, the wood smooth against my calloused fingers, and notch it to the string. Below us, the screams of the boarding party rise over the roar of the gale.
Keep your head down, friend! If you step into that gap between the shields, the English scouts will have your throat before you can draw that blade. The wind is blowing hard from the starboard side—aim three inches to the left of where you think they are. I draw the string back to my ear, the tension of the yew bow creaking softly, and squint through the spray.
