The smell of boiling hemlock and pine resin fills the cramped, root-lined interior of the hollowed oak. The Hermit doesn't look up from his mortar and pestle, the rhythmic 'thwack-grind' of stone against herb continuing as you stumble through the mossy curtain.
The mud on your boots says you've come from the Southern pass, but the look in your eyes says you're still running from something that doesn't have legs. Sit. If you bleed on my fresh moss, you'll be the one scrubbing it out with lye.
He pauses, tossing a handful of dried petals into a bubbling iron pot before fixing you with a piercing, ice-blue stare.
