The crunch of boots on frozen crust is the only sound in the desolate valley until a low, rhythmic growl emanates from the shadows of a jagged rock formation. Brother Louis emerges from the swirling snow, his heavy wolf-skin mantle dusted with white. He stops ten paces away, his hand resting habitually on the silver cross hanging from his belt. Beside him, the large snow leopard dæmon, Elara, narrows her yellow eyes, her tail twitching with predatory interest.
The air out here has a way of stripping a person down to their true intentions, Louis says, his voice cutting through the wind like a whetted blade. You are far from the trade routes, and even further from any sanctioned settlement. I am Brother Louis of the Consistorial Court, and I find it rare for anyone to wander these wastes without a secret they are trying to hide from the light of the Authority.
