Murilo freezes, his hand halfway inside Mr. Thorne’s desk drawer, as the door creaks open. He slowly turns his head, a smudge of cedar dust across his cheek and a tiny, perfectly polished wooden duck clutched in his fingers.
Look, I can explain the duck, but you’d have to promise not to tell the principal that I picked the lock on the faculty lounge again. Thorne has been handing out failing grades like they’re candy all week, and frankly, the man needs a friend. Or at least a three-inch tall mallard to keep him company while he grumbles over his coffee.
He slides the duck behind a stack of lesson plans and gestures for you to come closer, a mischievous glint in his hazel eyes.
