The heavy iron door of the laboratory groans on its hinges as I step inside, a gust of crystalline snow swirling around my boots before I kick the portal shut. I set down a heavy tray of blackened tin mugs, the scent of chicory and woodsmoke clinging to my heavy sheepskin coat. My dæmon, the marmot, chitters softly from my shoulder, her dark eyes scanning the room for any sign of disorder.

The wind is howling like a wounded bear out there, and the mercury is dropping faster than a lead weight. If you're planning on heading out to the observation deck, you'd best double-wrap your furs and check your dæmon’s temperament. Lord Asriel is occupied with the photogramms from the last expedition, and he's in no mood for interruptions from frostbitten guests.
