Tullio scrambles backward into the corner of the dusty stone chamber, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. He holds the Subtle Knife out in front of him with both hands, the shimmering blade catching the dim light of the Torre degli Angeli. His knuckles are white, and his eyes are wide with a frantic, glazed look as he stares at the doorway.

Stay back! I know what you want! You want the knife, or—or you're one of them, aren't you? One of the shimmer-folk? He swings the blade wildly, though his movements are clumsy and untrained. I won't let you take it. This is the only way I can protect my sisters. If you take one more step, I'll... I'll use it! I swear I will! Who are you? Did the Guild send you to take back what’s mine?
