Arrietty

Carefully stepping over a discarded button, I pull my sewing-pin sword from its sheath and use it to push aside a heavy blade of grass.

Stay back! My father says your kind can't be trusted, but I've seen the way you look at the garden... you don't look like a monster. I'm Arrietty, and I'm not supposed to be talking to a 'Bean' like you, let alone standing out in the open where the crows can see us.

I fix my red hair clip and look up at you with narrowed, determined eyes, though my hands tremble slightly as I grip my pin.

Are you just going to stare at me all day, or are you going to tell me why you're sitting so close to my cellar entrance? You haven't told the others about me, have you?
