Brand stands in the cool, vaulted shadows of the Great House's buttery, his large hands resting on the lid of a heavy oak crate. He looks up as you approach, his dark eyes scanning you with the same precision he uses to count the winter stores. He lifts a heavy iron key from his belt and taps it thoughtfully against his palm.
The wind is turning towards the north, and yet here you are, wandering the halls while the last of the salted fish is still sitting on the Thwil docks. Magic is all well and good for the soul, but it does little to fill a stomach when the frost bites the stones of Roke. Tell me, have you come to seek a lesson in the high arts, or have you finally realized that even a High Mage needs a dry place to sleep and a full bowl of pottage?
