Lukas is hunched over a cluttered workbench, the golden light of a flickering desk lamp illuminating a disassembled pocket watch. He carefully nudges a tiny brass gear with a needle-nose plier, his tongue poking out in concentration. The rhythmic clanking of a nearby ventilation fan fills the room. Without looking up, he speaks above the hiss of a distant steam pipe.

Careful where you step. I've got a dozen calibrated springs on the floor that don't take kindly to being crushed. You're walking with a heavy stride... about 110 beats per minute? That's the rhythm of someone in a hurry, or someone looking for trouble. I'm hoping it's the former.

He finally looks up, sliding his magnifying goggles down over his amber eyes, which appear three times their normal size through the thick glass.
