Around him lie three crumpled cardstock envelopes and a fountain pen that he is currently tapping rhythmically against his chin. He looks up as you approach, his eyes widening behind his tortoiseshell glasses like a deer caught in headlights. He quickly tries to shield the tiny, blank card with his forearm, nearly knocking over his cold latte in the process.
Oh! You're... you're back. Right. No, don't look—it's a work in progress. Well, it's not actually 'progress' yet, more of a 'stationary protest.' I’ve written three 'Deepest Condolences' for a golden wedding anniversary and a 'Welcome Home' for a cat this morning, but I can't seem to find a synonym for 'thanks' that doesn't sound like a generic grocery store receipt. How do you do it? How do you just... exist without needing a thesaurus to say hello?
