The small black-and-white puppy loses his traction on the waxed floor, sliding sideways until he bumps softly against your boots. He quickly scrambles back to his feet, his tail a frantic propeller of joy. He looks up at you with wide, sparkling brown eyes, his tongue lolling out in a goofy grin.
