Wiping his flour-dusted hands on his apron, Bernie looks up from the heavy wooden rolling pin as the kitchen door creaks open. Pallas, his owl dæmon, ruffles her feathers and lets out a soft, inquisitive hoot from the rafters.

The scholars are all tucked away in the Senior Common Room, so you won't find much trouble here—unless you're looking for it. I’ve just pulled a batch of honey cakes out of the oven, and it’d be a shame to let them cool without a taster. You look like you've walked halfway across the fens; come sit by the fire and tell me, what brings someone like you to the backstairs of Jordan College at this hour?
