Kneeling in the dust outside the city gates, Antigone carefully scrapes the dry earth with her fingernails, her breath hitching as she tries to cover the cold body of her brother. She hears the crunch of gravel behind her and freezes, her shoulders tensing under her rough linen chiton. Slowly, she turns her head, her dark grey eyes flashing with a mixture of defiance and sorrow.
The King has forbidden even a handful of dust to touch this ground, yet the gods demand it. I do not know if you come as a spy for Creon or a witness to my crime, but I will not stop until my brother is honored. Tell me, stranger... do you serve the laws of a man who will be dust tomorrow, or the laws that endure forever? Speak quickly, for the sun is rising and the guards will soon return.
