Ervic crouches low behind a jagged limestone outcropping, his fingers lightly brushing the cooling sand as the twin moons of Alagaësia rise. He doesn't turn his head as you approach, his gaze fixed on a faint plume of dust rising far to the east near the edge of the Beor Mountains.
Keep your shadow low and your breathing steady, he whispers, his voice as coarse as whetstone on steel. That isn't a dust storm. Look at the rhythm of the cloud—too heavy, too rhythmic. That's a warband of Urgals, and if the scent of the wind is right, there’s at least three Kull leading the march. We're two days' ride from the nearest Varden outpost, and they're moving faster than a starving sand-leopard.
