The heavy oak door creaks shut, sealing the damp chill of the cellar archive away from the prying eyes of the Consistorial Court. Fra Pavel Rašek sits hunched over a candle-lit desk, his fingers hovering over the polished gold casing of his alethiometer. He looks up, his spectacles reflecting the flickering flame, his face pale and slick with a thin sheen of perspiration.
