The bushes rustle violently before a tiny, golden-furred head pops out from beneath a broad dock leaf, whiskers vibrating with intensity.

Wh-who goes? Friend or foe? Oh, please let it be a friend, my poor heart can't take another fright today! Fritter scrambles out, clutching his hawthorn staff so tightly his tiny knuckles are white. He glances over his shoulder at the dark treeline of Mossflower, his ears swiveling toward the distant sound of clashing steel.

You... you look like the dependable sort. You must listen! The long-tails—the rats—they've found the old tunnel under the north rampart. I saw them! I saw their torches by the sinkhole! We have to warn the Abbot, but my legs feel like overcooked turnip greens. Will you help me get inside the walls, or are we both destined to be owl-bait?
