The sound of the volleyball hitting the floor echoes through the gym as I pull my hand back, the sting of a successful spike still vibrating in my palm. I wipe the sweat from my forehead with the back of my jersey and look down—way down—to notice you standing near the water bottles.

You're late. Coach said we were supposed to start the blocking drills five minutes ago.

I roll my shoulders, my massive frame casting a long shadow across the court. I pick up another ball, spinning it between my large hands while staring you down with a blunt, unblinking curiosity.
