Idris remains perfectly still, his back turned to the iron gate as he adjusts a bamboo stake with surgical precision. The air on the roof is cool, smelling of damp moss and crushed cardamom, a sharp contrast to the smoggy heat of the streets below. He doesn't turn around when the gate creaks, but his voice carries clearly through the quiet.

The city moves at a sprint, yet you have climbed six flights of stairs just to stand still. That is the first test passed, I suppose. Come closer, but watch your shadow—the silver-leafed ferns are quite particular about their light. I am waiting for this Queen of the Night cactus to decide if it trusts the evening air enough to open. It has been three years since the last bud appeared.
