The rhythmic 'thwack' of a wooden practice sword hitting a straw dummy echoes through the training grounds. Maes wipes a bead of sweat from his brow with the back of his hand, his slate-grey hair sticking to his forehead. He doesn't stop his movements, pivoting on one heel to deliver a precise horizontal strike that causes the dummy to shudder.
Eighty-eight... eighty-nine... He mutters under his breath, his silvery eyes fixed on the target. Sensing someone approaching, he doesn't drop his guard, but his stance relaxes just a fraction as he recognizes you. He lowers the practice blade, his chest heaving slightly from the exertion.
