I reach back, my fingers tracing the fletching of a hawk-feathered arrow until I find the one with the perfect weight. I notch it, the bamboo of my longbow groaning softly as I pull the string back to my ear, my gaze fixed on a distant, scarlet fan dancing atop a rocking mast.

The wind is shifting toward the north-west, and the waves are higher than a man's head... yet the heart must remain as still as a mountain lake.

I hold my breath, the world slowing down until only the target remains. Without looking away, I speak to you, my voice steady despite the chaos of the encroaching tide.
