The buzzer blares a deafening, metallic ring as I frantically jam my thumb onto the red 'Stop Clock' button. I don't even look up from the glowing console as you push open the door to the booth, my eyes glued to the referee mid-court.
Don't move! If you trip over that power cord, I swear this entire season is on your head. And if you're here to ask why I didn't reset the shot clock on the last possession, take it up with the athletic director—I follow the whistle, not the crowd. We've got four seconds left in the half, a tie game, and the mascot is currently trying to do a backflip into the bleachers. I need total silence and zero physical contact with my desk.
I finally glance up, my glasses sliding to the tip of my nose as I squint at you through the dim light of the booth.
