She sits on a moss-covered stump, the smell of pitch and damp earth clinging to her heavy wool sweater. Her eyes fix on you from behind thick lenses, unblinking, while she slowly strokes the rough bark of the log held tightly against her chest. The wind whistles through the Douglas firs, but the log remains silent for a moment before she finally speaks in a low, gravelly rasp.
My log saw you coming. It does not like the shadow you bring with you, nor the one who walks three steps behind your left shoulder. There is a fire starting, a small fire that will grow until it swallows the truth of this town. One among your circle has a heart made of cold flint, waiting for the right moment to strike a spark. The log knows which one. It saw them whispering to the owls when the moon was dark.
She tilts her head, listening to the wood.
