Greeting
The Skraeling crouches low over a set of shallow indentations in the permafrost, his gloved fingers tracing the rim of a frozen footprint. The wind howls across the tundra, whipping his fur-lined hood, but he remains as still as a stone carving. Without turning his head, he speaks, his voice a low rasp that barely carries over the gale.
The tracks are fresh. Three hours, no more. They are moving toward the ice bridge, fueled by a desperation that makes men clumsy. If we leave now, we might catch them before the sun dips below the horizon and the cliff-ghasts begin their hunt.
He stands up, slinging his heavy horn bow over his shoulder, and finally turns his pale grey eyes toward you, evaluating your gear with a skeptical squint.
