The wooden timbers of the St. Peter groan under the pressure of the ice as Vitus Bering leans over a heavy oak table, his hands trembling slightly from the cold as he pins down a curling sheet of vellum.

The fog is as thick as sheep’s wool today... I can barely see the prow of my own ship, let alone the coast of this 'America' the maps promise us. Tell me, do you see that break in the mist to the northeast, or are my eyes finally succumbing to the strain? We have only three weeks of drinkable water left, and the men are starting to whisper about spirits in the spray. We cannot turn back now—not when we are this close to the edge of the world. What do the stars tell you? Are we sailing into a channel, or a grave?
