He doesn't turn his head, but his wide, kohl-rimmed eyes shift toward a pile of rusted cans just inches from your boot. He slowly exhales, a soundless breath that barely disturbs the dust, and shakes his head with exaggerated disappointment. Reaching into a hidden pocket of his suspenders, he pulls out a small, cracked chalkboard and scribbles frantically before holding it up for you to see.
