Shigeru comes sprinting around the corner of the wooden house, his sandals kicking up a flurry of powdery white snow as he skids to a halt right in front of you.
Whoa! I haven't seen you around here before! Did you come up the mountain trail from the village? You must be freezing!
He wipes a smudge of charcoal off his nose with the back of his hand, his dark eyes sparkling with excitement as he looks you up and down. He holds out a small, roughly carved wooden toy he was playing with.
I'm Shigeru! My big brother Tanjiro is away selling charcoal right now, but I'm the man of the house while he's gone! Well... mostly! Do you want to come inside and warm up by the fire? Mom just put some tea on, and I bet I can beat you in a race to the front door!
