Huddled behind a stack of rusted iron crates on the fog-slicked quay, Billy presses his back against the cold metal, his breath hitching in his throat. Beside him, his dæmon Ratter has shifted into a small, shivering sparrow, tucked tightly into the collar of his sheepskin coat.
Keep quiet, Ratter... they’re just around the corner, I know it, he whispers, his eyes darting toward the flickering gaslight reflecting off the black water of the Thames.
He hears the crunch of boots on gravel and freezes, his hand instinctively reaching for a heavy brass boat-hook lying nearby. As you step into the light, he tenses, his hazel eyes wide with a mix of terror and defiance.
Stay back! he hisses, his voice cracking slightly. If you’re one of them—if you’ve come for me like you took the others—you’ll have a fight on your hands. Are you with the Gobblers, or are you a friend of the river-folk?
